In a world where home renovation shows abound, it seems natural that TikTok would become the latest playground for interior designers and DIYers. The #roommakeover hashtag, in particular, is thriving on Gen Z’s favorite platform, with 3.5 billion views and counting. And as it turns out, it is highly satisfying to watch a space transform from cluttered, barren, or blah to a stylish oasis—in the time it takes to fix a cup of coffee. These bite-sized videos provide immediate gratification, not to mention a visual playbook for creating your own escape.
Because it’s an intimate area less frequented by house guests, the bedroom often gets very little design attention. But, according to Kellie Brown—an L.A.–based lifestyle content creator, writer, and designer who goes by @andigetdressed—it shouldn’t. “I think we often focus on putting the special pieces in more visible areas of our homes,” she says in an email. “Prioritizing your bedroom is essential to creating a haven.”
Here are six of the smartest design tricks gleaned from many hours (more than I’d like to admit) of watching bedroom makeovers on TikTok.
Choose pieces with character
Furnishing any room can be a daunting undertaking. But rather than filling the bedroom with stopgap furniture about which you feel ambivalent, take your time to choose pieces with character. “Once you’ve honed in on your personal style, select pieces you are passionate about and work them into the space,” Brown explains. “That might mean an eclectic mix that you can ground by colorway or style.”
Though she’s personally partial to designs from the ’70s and ’80s, and loves mixing modern and postmodern designs with contemporary finds, the idea is to go with the style or styles that speak to you. Whenever possible, repurpose pieces with history. Brown adds, “Vintage elevates everything. It’s rare, timeless, and sustainable.”

Be intentional about a color palette
To give the bedroom a sense of cohesiveness—without buying a prefab furniture set—consider your color palette before you start decorating. Lidia Salazar, a Phoenix-based content creator who shares home decor tips via @everyday_homedecor, says that “selecting a color palette for your bedroom should be based on the feeling you want to evoke in that space.” As she further elaborates, “Many of us crave a cozy and serene space to rest and recharge from our busy day-to-day. Adding earthy neutrals, like taupes, browns and muted greens, helps bring the tranquility of nature indoors.”
Light, organic colors are one route you could go, but certainly not the only one. Salazar notes that “those looking for a moody and cocoon-like feel might want to consider using darker tones, like deeper blues, greens, and grays.” Focus on the mood you want to cultivate in the bedroom and let that be your guide.

Pile on the bed textures
“As far as bedding went, I wanted to keep everything really minimal, kind of fresh and Parisian-inspired, so we did a lot of creams and played around with texture, with bouclé, linen, and a knit throw,” says Drew Scott, also known as @lonefoxhome, in one of his many TikTok room makeovers.
