Before reading this Helix mattress review, there are a few things you should know: I love sleeping but understand zero about mattresses. Is sleeping on a firm mattress like sleeping on a wooden plank? How plush is too plush? Why does a hybrid mattress sound like a Transformer? Couple my lack of knowledge with an inability to make decisions and I've found myself asking other people what kind of a sleeper I am. All that changed when the Midnight Luxe mattress found its way into my question-filled life and introduced me to a proper night's sleep.
The Helix Midnight Luxe has a few fancy features going for it: zoned lumbar support for enhanced contouring, a premium quilted pillow top with an ultra-breathable Tencel cover, a medium “not too firm, not too soft” feel, and side-sleeper pressure point relief; finally, it is two inches taller than Helix's Standard mattress. In fact, the first thing I noticed about the mattress was how large and in charge it was. In my case, this was a great thing. For someone who loves a platform bed but doesn't want a mattress to be too low to the ground, the Midnight Luxe was the perfect solution.
As for the breathable Tencel cover, I sleep next to a six-foot-nine athlete who sprawls across the bed like he's the only one there, and I remained perfectly cool—not to mention I never felt him moving around in the middle of the night, or waking up at the crack of dawn. It allows me to dance between sleeping on a mattress that is actually supportive and one that mimics the feeling of a warm hug, all thanks to the zoning technology that offers a softer feel under your shoulders and a firmer one under your hips.
While the price point can be intimidating—$2,049 for a king—and admittedly, I was gifted the Helix mattress to review it—I can confidently say that I would save up and purchase the Midnight Luxe. I was looking for a mattress that felt soft and malleable but still provided enough lower back support so that my aging muscles would get some love. The most crucial factor, however, was something that could hold its shape, durability and 10/10 comfort level during a questionably long Bachelor marathon. And while I wanted my mattress to hold me closely, I didn't need the shame of my permanent imprint reminding me of how much time I actually spend in bed. The Helix mattress does all of the above, and therefore justifies the price for my specific needs. Plus, the delivery service made it all the more desirable. With the help of a friend—the mattress is quite dense and heavy—I was able to roll it out of the box and watch it expand pretty much instantly, just in time for Monday night's “Women Tell All” episode.
