Does Fashion Influence How Celebrities Decorate?

“Fashion and interiors are inextricable. It’s all lifestyle,” exclaimed Tim Gunn from his front row seat at the Carmen Marc Valvo show. “If I weren’t in this industry, I’d be in the interior industry. And I’m a huge Architectural Digest nut. My place isn’t trendy, and I hate the word eclectic, but there is a ton of history there. I have a lot of old things—furniture, artwork. It’s an ever-expanding project. I’ll never stop.”

“Yes, if you’re an aesthetic person, it’s something you carry with you,” explained Kate Hudson at the Michael Kors show. “It just becomes your style. I like experimenting with interior design. If I could do anything other than act, that is what I’d want to do.”

“I’m not big on wearing any kind of loud, crazy prints,” model Chrissy Teigen pointed out before the Donna Karan show. “When I see a print come down the runway, I think, I must have that . . . on a pillow. I’m an avid pillow buyer when I see a crazy print.”

After the Donna Karan show, AD spoke with Susan Sarandon, who took time out from showing adorable baby pics of her granddaughter to the designer to answer the question: Has fashion influenced your interiors? “My soul?” Sarandon answered wryly. “Is that what you’re talking about? No, fashion has not influenced my soul at all.” Love her.

AD interviewed model Kate Bock in the front row at Badgley Mischka. “I feel like my interior is a very all-American, Ralph Lauren vibe,” she said. “I definitely get inspired by watching what comes down the runway at shows.”

Backstage at Badgley Mischka, designer James Mischka answered: “Fashion has actually made us make our interiors very black and white. We deal with color so much every day in our work, we try to strip color out of our lives at home. Not in every room—we have learned to paint a guest room a dusty pink to flatter our visitors so they feel good when they wake up in the morning.”

“It’s one and the same,” said Blake Lively at a supremely elegant Marchesa show. “You’re mixing textures and colors. You’re putting unexpected things together—things that are vintage, pieces that are new. I look at interior design and the way you style an outfit in the exact same way.”

At the Alice + Olivia presentation, designer Stacey Bendet Eisner responded: “One of the prints in my collection is actually from a photograph of a wallpaper in my bathroom turned into a kaleidoscope. I’ll often take fabrics I’m using at the office and try them as a pillow or put them on walls at home. I have a dress from my pre-spring collection that I used to upholster the walls by my vanity. It’s all one, right?”

“I think one thing dictates another,” Kelly Osbourne said at Christian Siriano’s show. “Music dictates fashion; fashion dictates home interiors. They are all a part of one thing.”
