American Home Shield (AHS) is one of our top-recommended home warranty providers for North Carolina homeowners. We were impressed with its more than 50 years of industry experience, generous coverage caps (the total amount a company is willing to pay for a covered item), and comprehensive policies, including uncommonly covered items, such as your toilets, faucets, and unlimited AC refrigerant.

ShieldSilver ($29.99 to $44.99 per month): This plan covers your home systems, including your air conditioning unit, heating unit, ductwork, built-in exhaust fan, vent fan, attic fans, main breaker and fuse panel box, doorbells and chimes, interior electrical lines, ceiling fans, garage door openers, interior plumbing lines, toilets, faucets, valves, whirlpool tub motor and components, and water heaters.

Choice Home Warranty

Fast Facts:

Plans

Choice Home Warranty is an excellent choice for homeowners who want to cover a combination of built-in systems and appliances without having to sift through too many plan options. Choice Home Warranty keeps it simple by offering two combination plans: the Basic Plan and the Total Plan

Of note, Choice Home Warranty is currently subject to a class-action lawsuit filed by the Arizona Attorney General’s Office in 2019. The lawsuit alleges that the provider failed to uphold its contractual obligations to consumers by denying claims and delaying communications with its customers. When we reached out for comment, a representative from the company’s legal team informed us that Choice Home Warranty had approved more than 90% of 1.1 million claims filed in 2021. We recommend reviewing the service agreement thoroughly at the start of your policy, so you are confident in your understanding of the exclusions and limitations of your coverage.

Basic Plan ($46.83 per month): This plan covers your heating system, water heater, electrical system, plumbing system, plumbing stoppages, oven, range, stove, built-in microwave, cooktop, dishwasher, garbage disposal, ceiling and exhaust fans, ductwork, garage door opener, and whirlpool bathtub.

Total Plan ($54.75 per month): This plan expands on the Basic Plan by adding coverage for your clothes dryer, clothes washer, refrigerator, and air conditioner.

Our Recommendation

Whether you live in Charlotte, Raleigh, or another of North Carolina’s desirable locales, a home protection plan can help you focus more on the things that matter and less on the tedious nature of home repairs and replacements. Though we can’t decide for you, we recommend American Home Shield for customers who don’t want to worry about coverage caps for their built-in systems or low coverage caps for appliances. AHS does not stipulate a coverage limit on built-in systems and covers appliances up to $6,000 per item.

AFC Home Club is an excellent choice for homeowners who travel a lot or own a second home because the workmanship guarantee is valid for the entire length of the plan, not the usual 30 days offered by its competitors. Liberty Home Guard is another great option for homeowners with unique coverage needs, thanks to its more than 35 add-on options, including uncommonly covered items such as floor cleaning and gutter cleaning.

In any case, we recommend that you request a quote from at least three providers. You should also take time to carefully compare the plan options, covered items, and service contracts from each provider’s quote.

North Carolina Home Warranty Companies FAQ

How We Chose the Top Home Warranty Providers

Our team reviewed and researched more than 35 home warranty providers, thoroughly analyzed sample agreements, and identified customer pain points based on customer-review analysis and interviews with industry experts.

During this process, we determined that the most critical aspects of a home warranty company include available service plans and add-ons, depth of coverage, plan cost, industry reputation, customer support infrastructure, and additional features. We also focused on the ability to choose your own contractor, upgrade your coverage package, transfer your plan to another owner, and cover roof leaks, high-end appliance brands, ceiling and exhaust fans, and faucets and fixtures.

Our research supported that plan coverage should carry the most weight, with customer support as the second-most important factor. Industry reputation, plan availability, and additional features were rated equally. We determined that price range, while worth considering, should not be the primary basis for choosing a home warranty provider for your home’s needs.
