Plans

American Home Shield (AHS) offers three home warranty plans for Florida homeowners. The ShieldSilver plan covers built-in systems exclusively, while the ShieldGold and ShieldPlatinum plans offer combination coverage for built-in systems and home appliances. With AHS’s flexible service call fee model, you can select a $75, $100, or $125 fee, which will allow you to customize your monthly fees.

The company does not stipulate a coverage limit (the total amount the provider will pay for a covered item) on built-in systems in any of its plans. Its coverage limit for appliances is $3,000 per item with the ShieldGold plan and $6,000 with the ShieldPlatinum plan.

ShieldSilver ($34.99–$49.99 per month): This plan covers a suite of built-in systems, including your air conditioning, heating unit, ductwork, built-in exhaust, vent, attic fans, main breaker and fuse panel box, doorbells and chimes, interior electrical lines, ceiling fans, garage door openers, interior plumbing lines, toilets, faucets and valves, whirlpool tub motor and components, and water heater.

ShieldGold ($44.99–$59.99 per month): This plan covers all of the items in the ShieldSilver plan plus essential appliances including refrigerators, ranges, cooktops, ovens, dishwashers, built-in microwaves, garbage disposals, instant cold/hot water dispensers, clothes washers, and dryers.

ShieldPlatinum ($64.99–$79.99 per month): This plan includes all the items in the ShieldGold plan plus up to $1,500 for roof leaks, a discounted annual HVAC tune-up, unlimited AC refrigerant, and up to $1,000 in code upgrades.

Plans

Choice Home Warranty is an excellent choice for homeowners who don’t want to choose between appliance and built-in systems coverage. The Basic Plan covers 18 major systems and appliances, including your electrical and plumbing systems, but it doesn’t cover laundry appliances, your refrigerator, or air conditioner. The Total Plan expands coverage to include those items.

Since 2019, Choice Home Warranty has been involved in a class-action lawsuit that alleges it failed to communicate the reasons for denying claims for covered items. The case has yet to be resolved, but a representative for the company informed us that more than 90% of 1.1 million claims were approved in 2021.

Basic Plan ($46.83 per month): This plan covers a combination of built-in systems and appliances, including your heating system, water heater, electrical system, plumbing system, plumbing stoppages, oven, range, stove, built-in microwave, cooktop, dishwasher, garbage disposal, ceiling and exhaust fans, ductwork, garage door opener, and whirlpool bathtub.

Total Plan ($54.75 per month): This plan expands the coverage of the Basic Plan to your clothes washer, clothes dryer, refrigerator, and air conditioning system.

Plans

Liberty Home Guard (LHG) offers three standard plan options and more than 37 additional coverage options to further customize your coverage, including items such as wine coolers, pro-series appliances, and saltwater pools. Appliance and Systems Guard are the two basic plan options and they cover appliances and systems respectively. The Total Home Guard plan combines the coverage of the two earlier plans.

LHG assigns a service fee to each account based on the location of the home, any add-ons you select, and your plan. When we spoke to a representative for the company, we were informed that this fee will always fall between $65 and $125. Unlike other providers’ flexible service call fee models, this amount will not increase or lower your monthly fee.

Appliance Guard ($69.99 per month): This plan covers your clothes washer, clothes dryer, refrigerator with ice maker and display, built-in microwave oven, dishwasher, garbage disposal, range, oven, cooktop, ceiling and exhaust fans, and garage door openers.

Systems Guard ($74.99 per month): This plan covers your air conditioning system, heating system, ductwork, plumbing system, electrical system, and water heater.

Total Home Guard ($79.99 per month): This plan covers all of the items in the Appliance and Systems Guard plans.

FAQs: Florida Home Warranty Companies

How We Chose the Top Home Warranty Providers

Our team reviewed and researched dozens of home warranty providers, thoroughly analyzed sample agreements, and identified customer pain points based on customer-review analysis and interviews with industry experts.

During this process, we determined that the most critical aspects of a home warranty company include available service plans and add-ons, depth of coverage, plan cost, industry reputation, customer support infrastructure, and additional features. We also focused on the ability to choose your own contractor, upgrade your coverage package, transfer your plan to another owner, and cover roof leaks, high-end appliance brands, ceiling and exhaust fans, and faucets and fixtures.

Our research supported that plan coverage should carry the most weight, with customer support as the second-most important factor. Industry reputation, plan availability, and additional features were rated equally. Therefore, we determined that price range, while worth considering, should not be the primary basis for choosing a home warranty provider for your home’s needs.
